Life is Measured in Moments.

Remember that time when you made your entire 7th grade Spanish class burst into laughter when you rocketed a freshly-folded paper plane right at Senora Lopez’s head? (direct hit!)

Or the time you were unstoppable from the 3pt line during that Saturday morning game of pickup basketball?

And that day you had on your sharpest suit and cleanest shave, and completely nailed that presentation in front of a packed room?

Or when you forced a smile from a loved one, or saved the day for a stranger…

You see, we remember moments, not years.

Rarely do we say, “Wow, 2003 was amazing!” or “my 22nd year was unbelievable”… and if we do, we quickly recount the moments that made them spectacular.

Moments when we were at our peak… When we couldn’t miss… When we were faster, stronger, smarter… When we pushed farther or pulled harder… When we gave everything and asked for nothing…

Those fleeting instances that disappear in a blink and fade in a flash… Our ovation-worthy performances that quickly exit stage right before the applause stops or the curtain drops…

But how do we let them linger? Freeze frame the scene and DVR the highlights?

If we approach everyday with Moments as the measure, we’ll be poised to recognize them when they appear… and when we surrender to them, Life slows down…

We appreciate more, and disregard less. We notice details and act with urgency. We see beauty in simplicity and blessings in adversity…

We extend a hand.

We realize that a sinking sun is worth the wait… that a toast with friends is worth the drive… and that a laugh with mom is worth the price.

We battle pain and knockout fear. We don’t run from risk.

We rise to the occasion.

Life is the sum of the chances we take and the moments we seize

Become a collector of those chances, and a Master of those Moments…. And most importantly, Enjoy Your Moments, Always… #EYMA.

#besomebody.

    Memories are made from moments.

When someone asks how my trip to California was, I smile when I think about the first ‘moment’ I saw and hugged my brother after his deployment. I don’t remember everything about that week, but I remember the moments.

Great post, Kash. Can’t believe you let out the #EYMA secret! ;)

I had held on to #EYMA for long enough… felt it was time to share with the world! (or with the 10 of yall who actually care lol)… It always helps me remember to stop, be still, and enjoy the moment. :)

      thanks F.

“we extend a hand.” i think this is one of the most powerful things we are able to do in life – be strong for someone and hope your energy can be shared.

Hey Michelle – definitely agree… #besomebody is about self-discovery that leads to a Greater Good… we need to know ourselves before we can make the biggest, most meaningful impact on the world… figuring out who you are, what you want, and then committing to GO GET IT… once we’ve done that, we’re ready to lift others as we climb…

      thanks!

Great post!! I was watching Oprah a few days ago, and the segment was about happiness. She had an expert on her show (Dan Buettner, author of “The Blue Zones” http://www.bluezones.com) who claimed that the impact of a new “thing” lasts about 9 months -give or take, and a life experience & its memories have greater long term effects on happiness (travel, classes, etc). So when considering what gift to buy for a loved one, he suggested buying an “experience” instead of a material thing.

He also said that joining a club that requires you to show up at least once a month has as much of an impact on happiness as doubling your income!!

Your thoughts seem parallel to what the “happiness” expert is saying, so you must be on to something :)

Oh and by the way- San Luis Obispo, California is supposedly the happiest place to live in America. I’m trying to convince Kami to find a job there. Wish I could get the whole fam to move! #EYMA

Hey Myra – totally agree! I’m glad Dan and I are on the same page… ;) I love the idea of gifting/giving/receiving experiences vs things… for all the reasons you mentioned and for all the stories that you can share as a result…

If you guys make it to Cali and I will be on my way right after you!!

      thanks :)

Kash — Loving your perspective. My own observation has also been that we tend to remember the good moments more than the bad ones. I think it is Darwinian, something that helps us push ourselves to explore new opportunities and take on new challenges. Could you imagine if it were reversed and we remembered the bad moments more than the good ones? If that were the case the world would have less innovation/art/love and more only children. :)

    Keep it up!

Hey AG! – Agree… and if we see ourselves skewing to the “negative” ones, we’ve gotta quickly right the mental ship and head in the other direction… happiness is a mindset… and we always have to choose courage over fear…

and i think my mom might dig the “only child” world after raising my two brothers and me. :) )

    thanks

I usually do not leave a ton of remarks, however i did a few searching and wound up here Life is Measured in Moments. | . And I actually do have some questions for you if it’s allright. Is it just me or does it look like a few of these remarks look like they are written by brain dead folks? :-P And, if you are posting on other sites, I’d like to keep up with anything fresh you have to post. Would you make a list of every one of your communal pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
